I think that I'd almost always use the contrastive form for seven days from today for example or otherwise when there is perceived scope for confusion. When both the-next-Tuesday and the-Tuesday-after-that are referred to "this Tuesday" and "next Tuesday" may be used together.

 

I've been awake for 3 days. I want to paraphrase this sentence: I haven't been sleeping for 3 days. I haven't slept for 3 days. Do these sentences have the same meaning ? Thank you.

 

In the phrase " past year " year denotes a period of 365 days before the time being mentioned; " Last year " refers to the previous calender year. Situation 1: Today is Jan. 1 2015 I went to NY on Jan. 1 2014. Then I would say: " I went to NY in the past year ". Situation 2: Today is July. 20 2015 I went to NY on Jan. 1 2014.

As a further note the phrase " He's off today " certainly means they're not working today but is ambiguous as to whether it is because they were not scheduled to work or are taking PTO.

Would you think "the next 10 days" includes today? If not would there be a clearer way to put it to refer to today and the following 9 days?

 

Today is Monday. Last week is strictly the period of seven days ending at midnight on Sunday and the last two weeks is strictly the period of fourteen days ending at midnight on Sunday. No one would refer to anything occurring today yesterday or the day before as taking place last week or in the last two weeks. I wouldn't worry about it.

 

There's also the perennial question of whether the last day ends on the multiple of 24 hours from the time when the deadline was given if it means midnight of that day or closing time of that day or what. And does "7 days" mean 7 calendar days or 7 business days? Etc.
