The Western European hedgehog is found throughout Europe. It lives in a variety of habitats including woodlands and grasslands but also frequently in man-made habitats from orchards vineyards and farmland to parks and gardens.

Hedgehog (subfamily Erinaceinae) any of 15 Old World species of insectivores possessing several thousand short smooth spines. Most species weigh under 700 grams (1.5 pounds) but the common western European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) can grow to 1 100 grams.

 

It is a generally common and widely distributed species that can survive across a wide range of habitat types. It is a well-known species and a favourite in European gardens both for its endearing appearance and its preference for eating a range of garden pests.
