Greater London is a conurbation and one of the counties made from merging London proper with many smaller villages and towns. Together with the City of London they form Greater London's administrative districts.

 

Greater London is made up of 32 boroughs and the City of London. The City of London also known as the square mile due to its tiny area is in the very centre of Greater London and but is not actually a borough.

 

It contains 33 local government districts: the 32 London boroughs which form a ceremonial county also called Greater London and the City of London which is a separate ceremonial county.

 

The London region consists of 33 districts: the City of London the 12 Inner London boroughs (including the City of Westminster) and the 20 Outer London boroughs.

The present metropolitan county of Greater London constitutes nearly all of the historic county of Middlesex (which comprises the bulk of Greater London north of the River Thames) parts of the historic counties of Kent Essex and Hertfordshire and a large part of the historic county of Surrey.

 

Greater London is divided into 32 London Boroughs each governed by a London Borough council. The City of London has a unique government dating back to the 12th century and is separate from the county of Greater London although is still part of the region served by the Greater London Authority.
