Wordpad saves as .docx and MS Word can read it with no issues. However Wordpad will only read basic .docx files properly as MS Word has many more features than Wordpad. You get a warning saying Wordpad may not be able to read all content or it may display incorrectly.

I use WordPad for notes letters and anything important that I write. If my desktop computer using Windows 10 were to crash would I lose all access to my WordPad notes?

 

Set WordPad as default That worked fine BUT when I reopened the document I was experimenting with it opened in Microsoft WORD by Default - having closed that I was able to then search for the file and then reopen - by right clicking and instructing the PC to open another app as WORDPAD was not automatically offered.

Hello Andrew WordPad is installed by default in Windows 10 so you would only need to install it if you or something uninstalled it. This tutorial is only about installing and uninstalling WordPad so it would be best to post your other questions in the Software and Apps forum area.
