This article traces the responses of Afrikaners to the symbolism and political purposes of the 1947 royal visit to Southern Africa the first post-war royal tour and the first visit of a reigning sovereign to the Union of South Africa.

 

The Royal Party travelled by sea on board the battleship HMS Vanguard to South Africa and arrived in Cape Town on Monday 17th February leaving there on Friday 21st February for an extensive tour of Southern Africa.

 

THE visit of the Royal Family to the Union of South Africa earlier this year was indicative of the close friendship between the Union and the Mother Country. The visit strengthened the bond still further as was amply demonstrated by the warmth of the welcome extended to the Royal party.

 

The Royal Family arrived in Cape Town on 17 February 1947 and left for home on 24 April. They had travelled 7 000 km visited more than 400 cities towns and stop-overs and spoken to 25 000 people.

The recent discovery in the cellar of a home in Saxonwold Johannesburg of an old discoloured brass plaque is a heritage opportunity and opens space for reviewing the motives and outcomes of the Royal Visit to South Africa in 1947.
