Everything I can find on FB docs showcases a single key per side scenario. After I inspect usage of the secret chat I can only speculate it is build on top of the existing message exchange. The key exchange is just an additional key or index so FB can remove those message from the server.

 

These encrypted chats rely on a device key that ensures only you and the recipient can see the message. You can verify the device key to confirm that the messages are end-to-end encrypted set a timer to have secret messages disappear from the conversation and so forth.

Had a weird notification from FB messenger with a friend on one of our convos that were not encrypted and it said my keys were changed. I found out later that he had accidentally started an encrypted convo weeks earlier might?ve that? But why would my keys have been changed?
