ESP is protocol 50 AH is protocol 51. VPNs can fail if a firewall is blocking 50 and/or 51. So when troubleshooting a VPN that won't work one of the first things to look for is a FW blocking protos 50/51 a common problem.

The (outer) protocol header (IPv4 IPv6 or Extension) that immediately precedes the ESP header shall contain the value 50 in its Protocol (IPv4) or Next Header (IPv6 Extension) field.

The format of the ESP sections and fields is described in Table 80 and shown in Figure 126. I have shown explicitly in each the encryption and authentication coverage of the fields which will hopefully cause all that stuff I just wrote to make at least a bit more sense.

The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority has assigned Protocol Number 50 to ESP [STD-2]. The header immediately preceding an ESP header will always contain the value 50 in its Next Header (IPv6) or Protocol (IPv4) field.

The Encapsulation Security Payload (ESP) is defined in RFC 4303 has IP protocol number 50 and doesn?t have any ports. ESP allows the encryption of IP packets on the network layer carrying e.g. Layer 4 TCP traffic.

Security Payload (ESP) protocol which is designed to provide a mix of security services in IPv4 and IPv6. ESP is used to provide confidentiality data origin authentication connectionless integrity an anti-replay service (a form of partial sequence integrity) and limited traffic flow confidentiality. Encapsulating Security Payload supports both main Network layer protocols: IPv4 and IPv6 protocols. It performs the functioning of encryption in headers of Internet Protocol or in general say it resides and performs functions in IP Header.

This is a list of the IP protocol numbers found in the 8-bit Protocol field of the IPv4 header and the 8-bit Next Header field of the IPv6 header. It is an identifier for the encapsulated protocol and determines the layout of the data that immediately follows the header.
