Rabindranath Tagore (1861?1941) was by any account a literary giant of the twentieth century. A poet novelist playwright short-story writer essayist and travel writer he was the first non-European to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature with his poetry collection Gitanjali in 1913.

 

Rabindranath Tagore (May 7 1861 - August 7 1941) known also as Gurudev was a Bengali poet philosopher religious thinker and intellectual leader artist playwright composer educationalist and novelist whose works reshaped Bengali literature and music in the late ninteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Although Nobel Prize-winning poet Tagore prioritized poetry he also made notable contributions to literature as a dramatist novelist short story writer and writer of nonfictional prose especially essays criticism philosophical treatises journals memoirs and letters.

 

Tagore was knighted by the ruling British Government in 1915 but within a few years he resigned the honour as a protest against British policies in India. Tagore had early success as a writer in his native Bengal. With his translations of some of his poems he became rapidly known in the West.

 

Rabindranath Tagore the revered Bengali poet and polymath left an enduring legacy through his profound literary works and became the first non-European Nobel laureate in Literature.

 

Tagore modernised Bengali art by spurning rigid classical forms and resisting linguistic strictures. His novels stories songs dance dramas and essays spoke to topics political and personal. Gitanjali (Song Offerings) Gora (Fair-Faced) and Ghare-Baire (The Home and the World) are his best-known works.
