Empty statements like "I'm sorry to bother you." are polite but just make my goal of getting through all the unread messages in my inbox that much harder to achieve. So if your email was written in a professional manner but was just terse that's absolutely fine.

 

You would say "Sorry to bother you" if you were at someones doorstep asking them for a cup of sugar. You would "Sorry for bothering you" if you had bothered them in the past although people usually use either in a situation like the above.

 

Sorry if I bothered you Sorry to bother you Sorry if I am bothering Ngrams can only cope with phrases of up to five words but missing you off the last one isn't going to change the result significantly especially as that five-word phrase isn't found. I am in the middle of constructing my email to my colleague and I am out of words on how to say "I'm sorry for such a bother". Is there any other way of saying it politely?

 

The phrase "we do not mean to be burdensome" is very close to the "sorry to bug you" phrase yet has more of a formal feel. It also indicates that your intention is not to be a bother.
