Der norwegische Distrikt Lofoten umfasst im Wesentlichen die Inselgruppe. ?Lófót? bezeichnete ursprünglich nur die Insel Vestvågøya und wurde erst später auf die gesamte Inselgruppe ausgedehnt. Die Insel Flakstadøy wurde ?Vargfót? (Wolfsfuß) genannt.
